Die Hards is the sixth chapter of the Trigun manga.

Summary

BDN finds it necessary to kill one of the engineers who is quite willing to lay down his life to protect the passengers. He calls in Kaite to steer, who can’t, but is perfectly able to point out how hard the now dead engineer’s job was. Kaite finds BDN’s new desire to break the steamer unacceptable. BDN finds Kaite’s willingness to sell out the ship, but reservations about breaking it to be distasteful, and ignoring Kaite’s pleas to spare his father’s ship, prepares to shoot him.

Vash intervenes, shooting out the windshield, trying to defuse the situation, nearly gets shot by BDN and falls out the open windshield, dragging Kaite with him in a very unceremonious rescue. BDN is enthused by the challenge and has his men on alert.

In their search of the ship, a couple of Bad Lads are attacked by the insurance girls.

BDN starts using hostages at gunpoint to try to get the engineer to cooperate in steering, to no avail.

Vash and Kaite find their way back inside the ship through the ductwork. Kaite informs Vash to the fate of the steamer, which leads in to an old favorite quote about death and poverty bringing friends. Kaite reminisces about his workaholic father until Vash spurs him to action. Kaite whips out his copy of the blueprints to the Flourish and proceeds to cry about his dad. Vash hammers sense into him, literally, and they’re off to a more strategic position.

BDN is getting cursed by the engineer, moreso after he demonstrates his escape method, which is a zipline to one of his own vehicles outside.
