Midvalley the Hornfreak is the 11th Gung-Ho-Guns member.

Appearance[]

In the manga, Midvalley has dark hair styled in a middle part and light colored eyes. In his debut appearance, he wears a white single-breasted suit, a vest and a mid-toned undershirt, and is seen carrying a saxophone case. From then on, he wears a white double breasted jacket with a mid-toned undershirt.

In the anime, Midvalley has black hair, slicked back with a few strands loose at the front, and dark eyes. He wears a black single-breasted suit with a pink undershirt.

Personality[]

Midvalley, in the anime, was a completely devoted member of the Gung-Ho-Guns who was willing to give his life up to complete Knives Millions' orders. This aspect of his personality is starkly contrasting to the manga, him feeling instead threatened by Knives and conspiring with Hoppered the Gauntlet to escape the Gung-Ho-Guns.

Biography[]

Manga[]

Midvalley was a killer long before he joined the Gung Ho Guns. In the past, he was part of a small band of jazz musicians who also acted as hired assassins. One day, after killing an entire bar full of people to eliminate a single target, Midvalley and his band were greeted by Knives, who proclaimed that he was completely impressed with their methods. Midvalley was cautious of Knives, but his companions were not and tried to kill him for witnessing what they had done. Knives slaughtered them in seconds, and took Midvalley as a member of his Gung Ho Guns.

When he is sent alongside Hoppered the Gauntlet, they plot to disobey orders to torment, but not kill Vash the Stampede. This would allow Hoppered to get his revenge on Vash and for Midvalley to disappear in the aftermath. While Hoppered attacks Vash, Midvalley, and Nicholas the Chapel fight a secondary duel. Midvalley's and Hoppered's plot ultimately fails, and when Midvalley turns against Legato in a last ditch effort to escape his fate, Legato executes Midvalley by commanding the giant that transports him to smash Midvalley with the giant's spinning motorcycle tire. Afterward, he uses Midvalley's dead body to try to execute Hoppered as well. Though Vash protects Hoppered from Legato's attack, Hoppered later succumbs to his wounds and passes away. Vash and Wolfwood bury Midvalley and Hoppered next to one another, setting Midvalley's saxophone on the gravestone. Wolfwood remarks that he feels no sympathy for Midvalley's failure to escape his doom.

Abilities[]

Midvalley is a musician with an impressive skill in playing his saxophone, Sylvia, with which he is able to synchronize sound waves with pain receptors in the human body, causing immense physical damage and even killing. He is also able to neutralize sounds by playing counter frequencies, creating absolute silence. As a musician, Midvalley also has very sensitive hearing, being able to determine a blade's thickness through the sound of the wind passing through a cut it made.

Though he mostly makes use of his sound-based attacks, Midvalley is also a skilled gunman. His saxophone has a built-in hidden pistol, and he also carries some more conventional pistols with him.

He is somewhat restricted by the limits of his saxophone, for example not being to play the highest note on it after being struck by Wolfwood's attack as the saxophone had heated up.

Trivia[]

  • In the manga, he plays a baritone saxophone, but in the anime, it's a futuristic-looking Tenor saxophone.
  • "Hornfreak" is most likely a reference to how musicians call saxophones and french horns the generic term 'horns.'
