The Trigun anime series was adapted from the Manga by Madhouse Studios in 1998, and was aired on TV Tokyo from April 1, 1998 to September 30 1998, for a grand total of 26 episodes. A feature film titled Trigun : Badlands Rumble was released on April 24th, 2010.

Due to outpacing the manga's release dates, the anime differs greatly from the manga, often replacing key stories with newer ones or dropping them entirely. The general tone of the anime is also considerably lighter, reducing the overall level of violence, gore and sexuality. The second half of the anime adapts the general storyline of Trigun Maximum, but retains the original title.

Originally licensed by Pioneer USA (now Ganeon), the anime stopped being distributed on the USA after Ganeon closed down in late 2007. At the Katsucon 2010, Funimation Entertainment announced that they have rescued Trigun and will be re-releasing the series on DVD and Blu-ray in the fall of 2010.
